Litterless Lunch Challenge
Did you know that on average, school-age children using disposable lunches generate approximately 67 pounds of waste, per student, every school year? That’s almost 20,000 pounds of lunch waste for just one average-size elementary school.
This year, over 50 classes in my riding participated in the 2nd Annual Litterless Lunch Challenge, which was held during Waste Reduction Week (October 17-21).
I launched the challenge last year after meeting with students at Parkland Elementary who were practicing waste reduction in the classroom. Parkland Elementary went on to win last year’s challenge by going 94% litter-free.
The Litterless Lunch Challenge asks participating schools to track and record the number of litterless lunches packed each day during Waste Reduction Week.
The class with the highest percentage of litterless lunches is announced in the House of Commons and receives a free litterless lunch.
This year's winning class was Ms. Mackay's kindergarten/grade one class from Baker Drive Elementary School in Coquitlam, who went an astounding 100% litter-free for an entire week.
All participating classes did a great job, and my sincere thanks go out to the students, teachers and parents who made this year’s challenge such a success.
