NEW WESTMINSTER-COQUITLAM – Today’s by-election call will give voters in New Westminster, Coquitlam and Port Moody the chance to express their views on the HST, says NDP candidate Fin Donnelly.
“I welcome this election call,” said Donnelly. “I’ve heard from people throughout the community who say they want a chance to express their opposition to the Harper sales tax.
“Stephen Harper and Gordon Campbell did not consult with anyone before they decided to impose the HST on British Columbians next summer. Families and small businesses will be hit hard by this new tax, and they are angry they haven’t had a chance to speak out on it. This by-election gives people a chance to send a strong message to Stephen Harper.”
Donnelly said people have also expressed frustration with inadequate health care, transit and environmental protection.
Donnelly is a Coquitlam City Councillor and Executive Director of the Rivershed Society of BC. A former marathon swimmer, Donnelly is known for twice swimming the entire 1,400 kilometer length of the Fraser River to draw attention to sustainability issues.
“I know that if we work together we can create jobs, make life more affordable, protect our neighbourhoods, stop the erosion of public health care and clean up our air and water,” Donnelly said.
Donnelly was born in New Westminster, grew up in Port Moody and lives and works in Coquitlam.
