New Westminster–Coquitlam - “Stephen Harper continues to break his promises to Canadians by appointing his Conservative Party loyalists to the Senate,” said Fin Donnelly NDP candidate in New Westminster–Coquitlam and Port Moody.
“With the announcement that he will appoint Conservative party loyalists to the Senate, Stephen Harper is once again ignoring his promise not to appoint any unelected person to Senate,” Donnelly said.
“In the 2008 federal election Conservative candidate Yonah Martin was defeated in New Westminster- Coquitlam and Port Moody, but that didn’t stop Stephen Harper from appointing her to the Senate”, said Donnelly.
“I’m concerned that these unelected people are being rewarded through patronage appointments,” said Donnelly. “They haven’t been elected, but as Senators they will be lawmakers. It’s not right.”
The appointment of nine senators will cost taxpayers $3 million dollars a year in salaries, staff and expenses.
