COQUITLAM – Today the federal Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans began their week-long tour of both open net and closed containment aquaculture systems in British Columbia and Washington State to see first-hand the implications of open net salmon farms on wild BC salmon.

COQUITLAM –Tri-City resident Guy Black has been lobbying for a Canada Post Korean War commemorative stamp for nearly ten years. As the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War approaches, Black is determined to see Canadian involvement in the conflict recognized and has recruited local parliamentarians Senator Yonah Martin and Member of Parliament Fin Donnelly to carry his message to Ottawa.

This year over 4,400 men will die of prostate cancer in Canada and one in six will be diagnosed during his lifetime. During November, thousands of men from across the globe will participate in the Movember campaign and grow mustaches to raise awareness and funds to fight this disease.

On November 1st, I joined the New Democrat Moustaches For a Cure team. As many of you know, my friend, federal NDP leader Jack Layton recently went public with his personal fight against prostate cancer.

Coquitlam – In two months, New Democrat MP Fin Donnelly’s postcard campaign to save BC’s wild salmon has jumped from 1,000 to 5,000 signatures.

“This summer saw one of the greatest salmon returns in almost a century” said Donnelly. “The overwhelming support for my campaign over the past two months demonstrates how British Columbians do not want this to be the last great year for wild salmon”.

OTTAWA – New Democrats today called on the Government to commit to the protection of British Columbia’s environment by blocking a proposed mining development in the province’s interior.

“The minister has a responsibility to protect Fish Lake.” said New Democrat Fisheries critic Fin Donnelly “We know that the federal government has already determined that the mine would be too damaging to fish and fish habitat. When will this government stand up for British Columbians and do what’s right?”

Coquitlam - Total corporate tax cuts to the six big banks (BNS, RBC, BMO, CIBC, TD and National Bank) reached $1.4 billion earlier this fall; which happens to be the total cost of the Evergreen Line project.

While the federal government has given the 'Big Six' record tax cuts, the Translink Mayor’s Council is now considering asking individual tax payers to dig a little deeper into their pockets to fund the Evergreen Line’s $574 million shortfall by raising property and gas taxes.
