Boldly going where science fails to dazzle

The Record June 30, 2010

Biologists, environmentalists and politicos of various stripes have been saying for years that open-net fish farming is causing problems on B.C.'s coast - and they can produce the science to back up their concerns.

So you wouldn't think Fin Donnelly would need to go elsewhere looking for endorsement of his efforts to change the fish farming system.

Captain Kirk joins NDP MDP's wild salmon fight

By BOB MACKIN, 24 HOURS

William Shatner has added his face and voice to a campaign against the “cling-ons” that are killing wild salmon.

The Star Trek star recorded a promotional video to support NDP MP Fin Donnelly’s bill to outlaw the open-net fish farms which aid the spread of sea lice.

Shatner is urging Trekkies and non-Trekkies alike to sign “save our wild salmon” postcards and send them to their MPs.

New fish-farming legislation could save B.C.’s wild salmon stocks without devastating the province’s aquaculture industry, New Democrat MP Fin Donnelly said yesterday.

The new proposal calls for a transition to closed-containment salmon farms, which would protect salmon migration routes from sea lice, Donnelly said. He also initiated a “postcard campaign,” to pressure the federal government to pass the bill.

Actor helps city MP fight to have fish farms moved onto land

By John Kurucz, special to The Record June 12, 2010

Hollywood Bill, meet federal bill.

Legendary Canadian actor William Shatner lent his support Thursday to a private member's bill put forth by New Westminster-Coquitlam MP Fin Donnelly, one that would force all fish farm operators off the B.C. coast to move to closed containment within five years.

As Captain Kirk, he often lectured his crew to respect life and not to take things for granted. So it seemed appropriate, if a tad surreal, to hear William Shatner lecture reporters on the importance of salmon to British Columbia's ecosystem. "Salmon feed and nurture not only the animals that are on the land but the sea as well, and the plants and trees and shrubbery," the 79-year-old actor's disembodied voice told a news conference Thursday that had been organized by the New Democrats.

If -- or when -- William Shatner becomes Canada's next governor general, it's safe to say he'll put his vice-regal resources towards saving B.C.'s wild salmon.

The 79-year-old Canadian-born actor teleported (sorry, telephoned) his support from Los Angeles Thursday behind NDP MP Fin Donnelly's private member's bill to tackle the problems of fish farming on the West Coast.

William Shatner wants British Columbia's wild salmon to live long and prosper.

The Canadian icon, made famous for his work as Capt. James T. Kirk in the "Star Trek" series, has waded into efforts to protect wild fish from sea lice.

B.C. aquaculture critics have long accused farmed fish of spreading parasites to wild stocks.

CANADA IN BRIEF

VANCOUVER (CP) - William Shatner is hoping B.C.'s wild salmon live long and prosper.

The Canadian actor made famous for his work as Capt. James T. Kirk in the Star Trek series has joined efforts to protect the West Coast's wild salmon from potential sea lice.

Shatner beamed his way into a conference call with federal New Democrat Fisheries and Oceans critic Fin Donnelly and says it's our duty as Canadians to keep our resources from being destroyed.
